Story
We are really passionate about creating sporting opportunities for girls and young women as only 1 in 10 females over the age of 14 engage in enough physical activity. We want to promote more active lifestyles, positive mental health and increased confidence through sport by introducing the UKs first BAME, all girls longboarding crew called Boarders Without Borders. This project is part funded by Sport England, however, as individuals cannot benefit directly from the funding, we cannot buy the boards and safety gear for participants to retain. Therefore, we need to raise the remainder of the cost so that we can kickstart our project.
We are hoping to support girls aged 16-25 in Birmingham that derive from a BAME background (Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic). We are able to support up to 10 girls at a time with two tutors present at each session. This allows concentrated time in smaller groups so individuals will be receiving more intimate training, guidance and time.
This cause really matters to us as our entire organisation is built on the empowerment of females, in particular those from BAME backgrounds. We personally grew up with challenges in sports but have always had a love for it. As we’ve become young adults, we now longboard to de-stress, unwind and continue to build our own confidence as well as to stay fit. We want there to be opportunities for more female inclusion in sports, especially from BAME backgrounds and in uncommon sports such as longboarding.
We need financial support in order to purchase boards and safety gear for the girls to use every week as we train them to become fluent and confident longboarders. The funds will go directly towards each girl having her own board to use throughout the project as well as a helmet and safety pads for knees and elbows. We have received funding to film this as a mini-promo and therefore you will be able to see the direct impact of your support through the girls showing off their new found longboarding skills.
Stretch Goals:
- £900 = More advanced equipment for the girls such as board tools, sliding gloves and better boards. This will allow for more advanced techniques and lessons that'll create better boarders.
- £1,300 = An opportunity to take the girls down to London to meet the official Longboarding Girls Crew UK team for a booster session and an interview with the UK's biggest Longboarding magazine - Thrill.
- £6,000 = Ambitious. But we could fly the crew out to LA to explore the origins of longboarding, meet some of the original female skaters/longboarders and create some serious female BAME representation on the skate scene.
- £10,000 = Really ambitious. However, we could do all of the above and actually have a place to stay in LA; all whilst filming some amazing footage for the mini-documentary.
Thank you for helping us to create the UK's first BAME female longboarding crew! :)
