I've raised £2000 to Support the Ocean Cleanup Project www.theoceancleanup.com.

The Ocean Clean Up Project began in 2013 when 16 year old Boyan Slat was Scuba Diving in Greece and saw more plastic than fish! After 6 months of studies Boyan decided to quit his Aeronautical engineering degree to focus on solving the problem and a series digital media successes and crowdfunding projects has resulted in the Ocean CleanUP project being established. The aim is to develop technology to passively collect plastic waste from the main Ocean Accumulation Zones including the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Within that 5 years they have developed the first trial system to be implemented in the Pacific and are already producing great results and learning alot in the process.
I believe that, while our focus should be on reducing the amount of plastic waste being produced worldwide must be a high priority, we can't expect the oceans to look after themselves with the amount of waste we have already dumped and will be dumping there in the next few years and this seems to be the only project with the prospect of achieving some measure of cleaning up. The projects has an impressive stated aim of removing half the waste in the Pacific Garbage patch in 5 years and the rate at which they have developed suggests that this is achievable with the right support.
All funds raised in this fundraising will be donated to The Ocean CleanUp Project based in Rotterdam, Netherlands.
