I've raised £500 to help provide recycled bicycles to schools in rural parts of The Gambia.

On the 11th April 2019 my son Bodhi, aged 5, is attempting to cycle 500km along the Rhine river in Germany, with his Dad. They will have one bike each and use a 'follow-me' attachment which acts as a tandem when needed. They will wild camp along the way adding to the challenge.
I wanted to raise money on behalf of Bodhi because he's such an inspiration. The charity we would like to support is called 'Key foundation' based in The Gambia. However the project starts closer to home in North Tyneside at 'Key enterprise. The project is to provide bicycles to rural schools in The Gambia.
The bikes will belong to schools and loaned to children who have to walk long distances to get an education. Many six to eighteen year olds have to carry out such chores as fetching water and gathering fodder and firewood before walking 3-4 miles to school. Tiredness, lateness and danger from wild animals mitigate against these children from getting maximum benefit from their education.
This project starts at Key Enterprises in North Tyneside. A charity that provides supported activities for adults with learning disabilities, mental health problems or aquired brain injuries. One of the practical activities is bike maintenance, where the service users repair donated bikes and sell them to the general public. Although the adult bikes are popular, the children's bike are difficult to sell.
The project came about when the charity learnt about the desperate need for bikes in Africa. Through many contacts the staff and service users at Key Enterprises now send 10 bikes to The Gambia, with 80 sent to date.
Although Key Enterprises provide the bikes, they cannot support work outside the North East of England. Consequently a Gambia charity, 'Key Foundation' has been formed to carry out the Gambian side of the operation. Funds are needed to pay for port charges, transportation up country and repair kits.
Myself, on behalf of my son and his Dad would like to help this project! Bodhi, a keen little cyclist, cycles to school. We want to support and provide other children this opportunity!
Bodhi is cycling his little heart out for the next two weeks, let's support him and the wonderful work of Key Enterprises and Key Foundation.
