Story
Having visited the island of Jersey on many occasions and still feeling the need for challenges in my advancing years, I have decided to combine the two for a worthwhile purpose..
At 0300 on Saturday June 22, the Jersey Island Walk (www.islandwalk.je) starts in St Helier, the capital of the island. In a moment of Midsummer Madness, I will be there at the starting line, providing my alarm goes off. The walk consists of 48.1 miles round the coast of the island. It is not a race and while I am not setting myself any time targets, I do have a flight home booked for the afternoon of Sunday June 23!!!!
I have already been out to Jersey earlier in the year to scout out the route and it is going to be tough going. However, I have been training hard since the New Year and have clocked up over 800 miles (walking, not in the car) in preparation.
I am asking you for your support to raise funds for the Northern Ireland Hospice, Northern Ireland Chest Heart & Stroke and the charities supported by the Jersey Island Walk. I am using crowdfunding rather than the normal Just Giving method so that I can split any funds equally between the three designated charities.
Every penny I raise will go directly to charity; I am personally covering all the costs (entry fees/ travel/ accommodation etc)
Any donations, however small, will be greatly appreciated and I will keep you posted on how it is all going.
Many thanks
Brian Glencross

5 years agoThank you all for your incredible generosity which has helped to beat my target. I'm leaving the page open for a while as I know that there is still a few pounds to be collected. Once things are finalised, I will let you know the final figure. Your support and kind words kept me going when I suffered a few wobbles along Jersey's north coast. Thanks to Donna for all her support on the day, especially as my state of exhaustion on Saturday evening meant that our dinner plans had to be cancelled and replaced by sandwiches from the local Co-Op

5 years agoI must apologise for the delay in personally updating you on what happened on Saturday; I am just getting back to some kind of normality after a fantastic experience. With some help from Ibuprofen and Haribos, I managed to complete the 48 miles, in just under 14 hours, just before 5pm.. For my fellow geeks, I was 117th out of over 500 finishers, the last of whom got in after midnight. The support from everyone in Jersey was incredible, with hundreds of volunteers dotted around the island, providing much needed refreshments and encouragement.

5 years agoI have been away for some intensive warm weather training (well I've been on holiday in Rhodes) On reflection, it may not have been the best timing to do this walk just after 2 weeks of Greek beer, wine and food. However, I clocked up another 100 miles or so even though I did manage to acquire a very interesting bruise, after almost impaling myself on a road sign. Also the road between Lindos and Pefkos was good practice for the hill climbing in the middle bit in Jersey. Thanks to everyone for your incredible generosity.
