    Story

*** EDITED 16th Dec: We’ve just heard, that thanks to the advocacy and support of RNIB Cymru, Adam Price AM + Jonathan Edwards MP (and no doubt the pressure that the success of this campaign has brought to bear) that the health board have moved mum’s surgery to Feb 2017! We believe this is just for one eye so we will continue to fundraise for the other. ***

My mum, Jeannie Cottage, was given the devestating news that her cataracts would not be operated on until April 2018, due to the waiting list being so long. Nearly 18 months wait. On top of a 6 month wait for the initial consulation. We can't bear the thought of mum having to spend such a long time essentially blind when a simple out-patients operation will give her her sight back. The lowest cost to get this done privately is £2159 (in Cardiff) - that's for one eye.

Mum’s sight is practically gone, she's had to stop driving and she can't walk down the street on her own. She's losing physical condition which at her age is important to protect against and we are also worried about the toll her sight loss is taking on her mental health.

Will you give something towards mum's surgery? Obviously the whole family are going to rally round and pay for what we can but it's a lot to find. Ideally Jeannie needs both eyes done. Any funds over and above the cost of surgery we will donate to RNIB Cymru to help their campaign so that other people do not have to suffer becoming blind and disabled needlessly.

I will keep you updated and when Jeannie gets her sight back we'll throw a party for our all our supporters to say thank you.

You've raised £2034.00 (inc offline donations) which is AMAZING! Thank you THANK YOU everyone who donated + shared. I'm convinced that this fundraiser acted like a petition on steriods + supported the advocacy from the RNIB, our MP + AM which got the health board to move Mum's surger up to February! She got her left lens measured on Tues - it's completely clouded over now. After she's had that done we will use the money to get her right eye done privately so she does't have to wait yet another 18 months. Thank you again! Will keep you posted.

Less than a day to go! We've had offline donations totaling £519 so we have almost reached our target! Mum's pre-op appt is on 9th Jan so I will be able to tell you exactly if she is getting both eyes done or just one. If it's just one the money raised will pay for the other eye so mum doesn't have to go back on an 18 month wait. If by some miracle it turns out to be both, we will of course return all the money to all our kind donators - who as well as money have given us hope + amazing suport. Thank you so so much. Will keep you posted.

AMAZING NEWS! Just had email from RNIB Cymru, and Mum’s had a call confirming this - apt in Jan to measure for operation + surgery (we believe on one eye) has been moved forward to Feb! Which is absolutely fantastic and due to the wonderful support and representation that RNIB Cymru, Adam Price AM, and Jonathan Edwards MP have undertaken. We understand that we may still need to get Jeanie’s other eye done privately - but we will keep you updated after mum’s pre-op appointment. Thank you so much for your support.

We have gone over the HALFWAY mark! This is wonderful - really humbled by the kindness of people. You are amazing! Jeannie says "“I want to say a big thank you to the lovely people who have contributed to my eye fund… you are truly and wonderfully kind. I was despondent after I got the news of a very long wait. You have given me hope. I have felt elated seeing the fund start to grow. It will be wonderful to be able to drive my car again, and to cross a road unaided, but mostly to be able to create fabrics, textile pieces and quilts."
