Story
Thanks to support from Heritage of London, and the London Borough of Lambeth, we have been able to refurbish four traditional market barrows. These are now in service in Brixton Market selling fruit and vegetables, and other household goods. The traders (who have agreed not to sell their refurbished barrows for five years) are well pleased!
Such traditional market barrows enable the markets to function without motor vehicles, and save the trader time and effort in setting up and taking down each day.
We now want to refurbish another three barrows, this time flat barrows. Like the fruit and veg barrows, these are working barrows, enabling the market porters to move hundredweights of market infrastructure and supplies using just human muscle power. This minimises noise and pollution in the market area. But like the fruit and veg barrows, the market flat barrows are in urgent need of refurbishment.
Refurbishment means dismantling the barrow and rebuilding it, replacing timber, parts and wheels as appropriate. It takes a great deal of time from a skilled craftsmen to do this, plus the cost of wheels and other parts.
Please spare a tenner or two to help us to secure the future of these iconic parts of Brixton Market.
