Story

Brontë Bell Chapel goes back over 400 years and has a wealth of local History. The reason it is known as the Brontë Bell chapel is because it is the place where Patrick Brontë was Minister from 1815-1820. Thornton, the small village where this famous chapel is located, is the birthplace of the famous Brontë children - Charlotte, Emily, Anne and Branwell who were all christened in this very chapel.

The Old Bell Chapel Action Group which was started by Steve Stanworth, meet every Saturday morning to maintain the graveyard and rebuild the damaged graves and have been doing so for over 15 years now. They have managed to fund everything through kind donations and community grants.

Just recently the Bell Chapel has unfortunately had some vandalism damage, which of course needs repairing. Some of the damage includes the handrail of the decking, which creates a safe footpath for site visitors. Some visitors require this rail in order to help them down to the base of the site. Other damage includes the slate from the roof removed and thrown to the floor. The slate in particular is one of a kind as it was the original slate from when the Bell chapel was first built.

The Old Bell Chapel Action Group are seeking kind donations to help fund this new repair project as unfortunately the council don't seem to want to help us.

We appreciate any sort of help to restore this site to its former glory once again. We want to continue to tell the story of Thornton's connection to the Brontë family for generations and we can't do this without the help of others to maintain it.
