Story

Just over a month ago, my mum was admitted to hospital with her health deteriorating, doctors were still unsure as to what was wrong with her until a few days ago. She has been passed between three hospitals to ensure the best care was being given for what they believed they were treating.

Last week, doctors told us they had discovered her liver, once again, is failing her with no possible treatment as she is too ill for another transplant. They have diagnosed 'Portal Hypertension' - a condition which has caused the veins in the liver to disappear causing reduced blood flow and high pressure not only in the liver but also around the body. The veins which are still present, are showing clots within them which could also lead to them collapsing.

As most people know, my mum received a liver transplant almost five years ago. This was due to a condition called 'autoimmune chronic hepatitis' - although her transplant improved her health greatly it is not seen as a cure for her condition and is now attacking her liver in a different way. Although re-transplantation would be an option in others with portal hypertension, it is not an option for my mum as she is too ill.

We are prepared to try non conventional types of treatment, which through research, has worked in various patients with similar liver conditions. This treatment causes cell suicide in the 'bad' cells whilst protecting the 'good' cells of the liver. However, it is very expensive.

I realise it is a lot to ask for you to donate your hard earned money, but any donations big or small would be greatly appreciated as this treatment could potentially save her life.
