    Story

Liz Jupe, 63, is calling for more volunteers to help her raise awareness and donations for The Broomfield Horse Sanctuary, based near St Just, so she can carry on 31 years of hard work.

Currently a one-man band, she single-handedly feeds and cares for 12 horses and ponies and one goat every day.

Each of them has their own story, the charity standing by a promise to take on horses and ponies who are in need of care of attention as a result of sickness, maltreatment, neglect or poor circumstances.

But funds are low and if Liz hopes to continue her work, she needs urgent help.

She says: “I am always very busy with at the sanctuary and fundraising has fallen to the wayside, particularly as we have been waiting on a legacy which was left to us. However, after a couple of years it is yet to come through due to legal complications.

“Now there is the fear that if we don’t raise more funds, we may not be able to take on any more horses or ponies.”

Ages of the horses range from eight to 31 – with many residents now in their latter years.

Unfortunately, circumstances mean the latest rescues to join the sanctuary were over a year ago.

Liz says: “It isn’t just about the money – I was absolutely exhausted after working 24/7 and not having any weekends to myself either.

“It’s a lot of work to keep it all going. If anyone would like to volunteer, they don’t need any experience with horses – just a love for animals and a want to learn.”

Arguably some of the best views in West Penwith, the site is nestled between the Levant and Geevor tin mines - giving the residents near-perfect 180-degree sea views.

“Every contribution helps and is carefully spent to get good value for the horses and ponies’ welfare,” says Liz. “Fundraising is a constant battle and we’re always happy for supporters to have coffee morning or jumble sales – anything really. Please help us help them, in whatever way you can.”

Thank you to everyone who helped us reach or original target of £200! We genuinely didn't expect such an overwhelming response - it's been so heart warming. We are hoping we can raise a little bit more now, so we can keep on doing this great work until we get a proper fundraising site sorted. Thank you so much for all your lovely donations - every penny means a lot! x
