We are very excited about the creation of our new Sensory and Remembrance Garden. Construction is under-way and we are hoping the garden will be ready in time for our children to enjoy from the summer term.

The potential of a school garden as a natural and sustainable resource, offers huge benefits to pupils across all areas of the curriculum, but importantly also in supporting children’s social and emotional development. The RHS’s Gardening in Schools initiative identified that a school garden can provide opportunities for increasing scientific knowledge and understanding, as well as improving literacy, numerical and verbal skills. It has been shown to improve pupils’ confidence, resilience and self-esteem and gives children a sense of responsibility, fostering positive behaviour, particularly for those with behavioural and learning difficulties.

The garden will be a retreat for those children who might need a quiet space, allowing them time to relax and unwind, away from the hustle and bustle of the main playground. Carefully chosen features, building materials, plants and garden accessories will be used to create different sensory experiences for the children.

Our new garden will also be an invaluable teaching resource. It will help support learning across subjects including Maths, Science, English and Art, providing teachers with the opportunity to enrich their lessons, finding fresh ways to engage with children and to address different learning styles.

We are raising funds for our garden through sponsorship and donations, and are busy approaching businesses, charities and organisations for their support. To supplement this we wanted to provide a platform for those parents, carers, friends and extended family who might want to make a donation themselves.
