Story
As many of you know in May of 2017 I lost a dear friend and mentor. I had been meaning to start a library project in our village in Uganda for a number of years, but was always "too busy". After my friend died I felt there was no better way for me to channel my sadness than to open this library in memory of her and my grandmother Nora who also died too young. I know she would have wanted me to do something positive like this, in fact she would probably have asked me why it took so long. The villagers are so grateful to have access to reading materials, it is full every evening and every weekend day, it fills my heart every time I visit - to remember her in this way.
We now have over 40 visitors a day to the library, where they can read books or be read to by our team of librarians. The community is so happy to have this resource and others villages have been asking us to provide them with a similar library.
Earlier this year a friend and neighbour here on the Nile got in contact with a huge donation of 25 boxes of books from a school near her in Liverpool. She would sort and box them if I would pay for the shipping to Uganda. It was a huge challenge to get them here and ironically more costly to get them from Mombassa to the library than from Liverpool to Mombassa.(TIA) But they are now on their final leg of the journey.
Normally we cover the day to day running costs of the library ourselves as our way of supporting our local community, but with shipping costs running just over £1000 to get these books here I thought it was time to ask for us for help from other sources.
Please give whatever you can to support this worthy and truly effective cause.
