Weʼve raised £1,057 to Help Publish Butcher's Dog Issue 12

Funded on Monday, 28th October 2019

    Story

Due to increased publication costs, a slow year in sales and a lack of funding, we are currently unable to take our forthcoming Autumn issue to press without your support.

no amount is too small. just hit donate & type in as much or as little as you can give

What do Butcher's Dog do? For each issue we receive thousands of poetry submissions. We read these poems completely anonymously. Every poem we receive is read closely by at least two highly experienced editors. Over a number of months the team follow an extremely attentive editorial process engaging deeply with the work until the strongest and most exciting 24-25 poems reveal themselves. Though we can't always provide in-depth feedback due to demand, the long listing process lets poets know their work has caught our eye. This intense process is the reason we only publish Butcher's Dog twice a year.

we only publish quality not quantity

How can you help? If you've sent us poems in the past, you'll know we've never charged submission fees and we'd like to keep it that way. Nor do we make it a prerequisite that you purchase a copy of the magazine that year because in the current climate, we know these models just aren't feasible for everyone. However, if just 20% of the poets who sent us their work for one issue bought a magazine, our publication costs for the next would be covered. Likewise if we charged every poet just £1 for a submission. At £5.99 we sell each magazine at cost price, without profit. We're regularly told by readers this is much too cheap for the aesthetic, book-feel and content but we're loathe to put this price up in a time of austerity.

In a nutshell, we simply can't continue to print the magazine without folks buying, subscribing or otherwise supporting the magazine. We now need your support to stay in press.

If you've ever sent us a poem, been published by us or just enjoyed reading our canny little mag, we're calling on you to consider making a donation to help keep our brilliant independent poetry magazine in press.
