Weʼve raised £1,953 to Save the Cabinet at Reed

Funded on Monday, 30th September 2019

    Story

The Save the Cabinet Fighting Fund has been created to help save the beautiful 400-year old Cabinet pub, the last pub in Reed, Hertfordshire, from being turned permanently into a house.

Planning permission for change of use was refused last year by North Hertfordshire Councillors. The developer who owns the pub appealed. On 11 December we learned that the appeal had been dismissed - a very welcome result and a massive step on the way to restoring The Cabinet to its proper place as a pub at the heart of this community.

We have been raising money to help with the costs of resisting what was a complex appeal. We have paid all our bills - but had to borrow money to do so. We now need funds to clear our debts and to continue the fight to reclaim our lovely old pub.

But ... did you know that the law allows developers to slap in more and more planning applications? Neither did we. In the spring of 2019 we successfully resisted an application for permission to subdivide The Cabinet and create what's widely known as a "stub-pub" - a business bound to fail and designed to deliver change of use. And now we're faced with another application - this time for listed building consent dressed up as a proposal designedto reinstate The Cabinet as a pub. Read more on our website here.

Huge thanks to everyone who has contributed to the Save the Cabinet Fighting Fund via our JustGiving page. The planning appeal by the current owner of the pub was heard at the beginning of November - it took the form of a 3-day Public Inquiry - and our fundraising was mainly aimed at covering our costs. A decision is expected before Christmas. We have published a summary of our accounts here: https://www.savethecabinet.uk/events.htm - we have a shortfall of over £2000 so we still need to raise money, but our target is reduced.

I’ve only just found out about this. I am shocked! I used to drink in the Cabinet on a regular basis back in the 80’s when a good friend of mine lived in the village. A lovely pub.

Hope you succeed - I live 10 miles away but liked the pub especially when walking.
