Story

In south east Northumberland, Cramlington & District Red Squirrel Group are managing to maintain a small healthy population of red squirrels. We have over 20 members who dedicate their free time to help with vital conservation work. The group has over 150 monitoring stations which are frequently checked for squirrel activity and also provide vital information on the squirrel populations, health and prove an excellent early warning indicator for diseases such as Squirrel pox virus.

This campaign looks at how we can achieve long term management goals with the support of local volunteers and the wider community.

We are also looking for support from local businesses and individuals as we require annual funds of in excess of £1500 to help with our conservation efforts. All of the work is carried out on a voluntary basis at no cost but the materials for monitoring stations, feed, and other projects all require funding.

One such project we are currently looking for funding for is a squirrel bridge to cross the B1326 at East Cramlington which over the past few years has seen casualties rise and total fatalities currently stand at over 40 red squirrels.

All financial donations will be gratefully received and put to good use. Likewise if your business could offer materials or products to assist in our work please contact us.
