Weʼve raised £10 to Buy cameras for the Refugee Warehouse in Calais so that far-right fascists who hate us for helping refugees can be brought to justice

    Story

The Cambridge University Refugee Action Group are a bunch of students who go to Calais and help out in the new 'jungle.'

Many of the people living there are now in shipping containers. Just imagine - you can't go back to your own country because of war, you can't settle down in Europe because it's apparently political suicide to accommodate you (what has the world come to?) and so, for the foreseeable future, with Christmas coming, you live in an overcrowded box, dreaming of sneaking into a lorry to live as an illegal immigrant earning less than the minimum wage in Britain with none of the legal protections of citizenship. Hard to imagine a worse kind of hell. These are among the most vulnerable yet innocent people in the world and we want to try and help as much as we can.

Basically, these are PEOPLE who risk their lives in boats that capsize and kill them by the hundreds for the opportunity to reach Europe and then when they get here, they are packed into the most appalling conditions and left there. Yet thousands still attempt the crossing, which speaks volumes for what they've left behind.

Yet far-right fascists attack the cars of volunteers every week, hating the fact that we are trying to help refugees; they think that a few items essential for living distributed according to need is going to make people risk their lives to come over and steal their jobs. I want to be able to deter these people with cameras and improve conditions all-round.

I don't know if using my name to promote this cause will do any good. It may be that people are sick of hearing of my name. Maybe antipathy towards migrants is now so ingrained that people will just ignore the story; we have been so desensitized to this sort of thing that it may not resonate with people. But it does with me, and it does with those I'm going with. We want to make sure that others can help safely and make conditions decent at the camp. Please, pretty please, share what we're trying to do.
