How it all started:

As a primary educator, I am obsessive about the quality of texts in terms of both content and illustration that I use in my classroom as well as at home. I care that these books also include representations of the population around us, particularly those who are often underrepresented in the books that we read.

Why Calder Valley Books for Change:

We want to give our kids the whole story. We need our primary school libraries to stock a diverse range of fiction and non-fiction; picture books and chapter books that include diverse characters of colour, ability, strong female protaganists and boys that are not afraid to be different. Children need to be able to see themselves reflected in the books that they read, as this provides them with confidence and value: and to be able to peek into other peoples lives and read about children who are not like them, will expand children's understanding and empathy.

Books for schools:

Schools are under immense financial pressure. When I speak to my colleagues, all too often I hear how educators spend their own money on books for their pupils, or have to reach for old titles they have had in their collections for years.

It's time to make a change.

With your donations, we will buy sets of diverse books for every school in the Calder Valley, supporting educators to be the best they can be. These books will be carefully selected with the help of my colleagues and professionals in the book industry such as The Letterbox Library.

Calder Valley Books for Change has already raised just over £2000: funding for the first group of schools in the Calder Valley to recieve sets of diverse books. Lets make this happen for every Calder Valley school: donate, share, like and follow us.

Every donation, no matter how small, will help us to buy a book that just might be the one that changes a child's perspective forever.
