Story

Harberton Special School is a school for children with moderate and severe learning difficulties. Many children have medical needs including Autism, Down Syndrome and other complex needs. Our son Caleb has Autism, he is 14 years old and has attended Harberton for many years. Harberton has two campuses, situated in North and South Belfast, about 45 mins apart. Harberton South currently has an assistance dog called Millie. On Easter Tuesday Caleb will be doing a sponsored walk with family climbing both Divis and Black Mountain; this is a 7 mile walk and will certainly be a challenge! We as a family are hoping to raise money towards a therapy assistance dog that will provide support for post-primary pupils at the Harberton North campus which Caleb attends. Therapy dogs provide a range of positive experiences for pupils, including developing social engagement and communication skills, providing reassurance and comfort along with sensory stimulation. However, they are not cheap, costing around £6000. We are aiming to raise £2000 towards the cost through Caleb's sponsored walk! So how can you help? Please consider sponsoring Caleb, making a donation or come along and join our walk! Thank you for taking the time to read this, Harberton has given us so much HOPE as a family and we would love to give something back to show our support.
