Story

Let's get Wrexham back on the airwaves!

We are a group of volunteers based in and around Wrexham who created a task force with the aim to successfully retain the community radio license known as Calon FM for the area. To make this possible we set up a Community Interest Company: Wrexham Community Broadcasting (WCB). A board of Trustees have been appointed and we are now registered with Companies House under No.13256467.

Calon FM has been an amazing public resource in Wrexham for over 13 years. Sadly the station has been on hiatus whilst a new board was formed and new premises sought. This all means starting afresh and we desperately need funds to get back on air as soon as possible, for equipment, bills, license, premises and staffing.

Calon FM is Wrexham's community station with a local reach potential of over 100,000 and thanks to the success of the many volunteers has seen listenership online globally hit many more. It has proved a vital resource during the pandemic both as a moral boost and as an anchor for mental well being in the community. The work and crucial experience the station gives provides career opportunities, shared ventures, new friendships and at its core the beating heart of a lovely town. Links to a Just Giving Page will be along shorty.

“Over the years I have witnessed on many occasions just how integral the station has become to the Wrexham Community. Wrexham deserves a community radio station and in my role as a Member of the Senedd for Wrexham, I will do all I can to support this venture.”

- Lesley Griffiths, Senedd Member for Wrexham

The overarching aim of WCB is to promote community development, economic regeneration and lifelong learning through the production and delivery of programmes through local broadcast media.

We will provide a platform to encourage and facilitate empowerment, lifelong learning and access to community radio to everyone, welcoming all people whatever their protected characteristics.

We have 35 dedicated volunteers with the number growing daily, with experience in delivering high quality, community radio in the Wrexham area.

WCB has a remit to provide training that will develop confidence, self-esteem and motivational skills to improve the quality of life of the community of Wrexham.

There are few opportunities where people from all backgrounds can access a free resource locally, both in terms of training and as a social platform. WCB will work closely with local schools, colleges and social and physical rehabilitation centres to offer training and educational placements.

WCB will provide training to encourage social integration and media literacy to improve the integration of young people into the workplace. We will work closely with schools and sixth form colleges, as well as Communities First areas, and rehabilitation centres throughout North Wales to provide work experience and promote media literacy.

Wrexham Community Broadcasting consists of the former staff and volunteers of the former Calon Communications Limited (CCL) organisation, and as such has 13 years experience in running an award-winning community radio station for Wrexham. This group is also supported by the Wales Community Radio Network, which consists of all station managers of community radio stations in Wales, of which the Calon FM station manager was a founding member.

“We at Clwyd Special Riding Centre have been incredibly grateful to have radio ‘air’ time with Calon FM and with Dave Williams. He and you have given us an extra ‘voice out into the community. This is something that we need now more than ever before.”

- Victoria Everall, Clwyd Special Riding Centre Trustee
