Encouraging active travel has always been important to us at Camden Clean Air, and due to the various lockdowns, we saw a huge increase in the number of people taking up cycling. The Camden Clean Air Cycle Ride is a friendly, non-competitive bike ride for the whole community to take part in, regardless of fitness level, to celebrate cycling, cleaner air, and the beautiful sights of Camden.

What is it?

After the success of our first event in 2021, we will be holding The Camden Clean Air Cycle Ride again on Sunday 12 June 2022 from 09:30am, with staggered departures from 10am to 12noon. We have finalised the new route below, which takes in Swain’s Lane, Hampstead Village, Primrose Hill, Regent’s Park, Fitzrovia and Tottenham Court Road, Lincoln’s Inn Fields and many other iconic parts of Camden.

Among other jewels, we will go past Highgate Cemetery (where Karl Marx is buried); John Keats’s house; The Wells and Campden Bath and Wash Houses (since many of the worker’s homes in Victorian Hampstead had no running water, this public building provided both drinking water and facilities for bathing); Burgh House (the local physician’s Queen Anne-period mansion, which includes the Hampstead Museum); the London Zoo giraffes; the Rose Gardens; Fitzroy Square (one of the prettiest Georgian squares in England); the BT Tower; Bedford Square (a private Georgian garden); the British Museum and Russell Square; Holborn; Chancery Lane (legal London at its best, this route originated as a ‘new lane’ created by the Knights Templar in the 12th century); Lamb’s Conduit Street (which used to be an important water cistern fed by a dam across a tributary of the River Fleet); and the beautiful St Pancras station.

The 2022 event will include many exciting new features, including the possibility to decide your own start time window and being guided by a marshal (or not). But, most importantly, we have secured the support of the amazing King’s Cross Estate, so our start and finish lines will be in the beautiful development at Granary Square.

We’ll have many cafés and bars signposted on the route, where you can choose to stop for refreshments. Or of course you can decide to make the most of your time at King’s Cross, with its vast offering of shops and restaurants, once you finish the ride. Sustainable and fully compostable medals will be handed out to all those who complete the route.
