Honduras, Central America ·International aid

Story

In August, I will be flying to Honduras in Central America with a group of student volunteers as part of Global Brigades, to provide medical aid to rural Honduran communities.

Global Brigades is an international organisation of students, doctors and other healthcare professionals whose aim is to support people in under-resourced countries by improving sanitary conditions, providing medical equipment and offering medical consultations and public health workshops. Brigades are run frequently to locations around the world such as Honduras.

With 66% of the Honduran population living in poverty, and having only 37 doctors per 100,000 people, Honduras relies heavily on organisations such as Global Brigades. You may have also read that President Trump has recently cut aid to Central America. This means that countries like Honduras are in need, now more than ever, of volunteers and funding that Global Brigades offers.

During the brigade, we will be supporting the medical professionals on various different stations in the medical centre. We will be assisting in medical and dental consultations, sorting patients in the triage system and referring patients to hospital. In the pharmacy we will be sorting and distributing medication under supervision of a pharmacist. During public health education sessions, we will hold workshops and talks for both children and adults, increasing awareness of health risks and preventing future disease. Finally, we will also be building new and more accessible lavatories and plumbing that will improve the sanitation and quality of life for the communities.

The money that we raise before going on the trip will contribute to funding the equipment, medication, supplies and medical professionals that allow Global brigades to access and treat as many patients as possible.

As a medical student, I am not only excited to help the Honduran communities, but I will also gain invaluable experiences that will enrich my future career in medicine. I am also very keen to explore a new part of the world, discover the Honduran culture and hopefully learn some Spanish!

I have added a video and a website link below that outline what the organisation does and how we will make a difference by volunteering.

Thank you in advance for your support and donations, any contributions are hugely appreciated!
