I am an organizer of the cheese roll Brockworth Gloucestershire, this event is one of the oldest traditions in the uk, chasing the cheese down a very steep hill, it goes back hundreds of years, the hill has eroded, and needs specialized maintainence, which the volunteers we have cannot do, we organize the cheeseroll every year, in the past at our own cost, in the last 2 years we have had a couple of buckets out, to help pay for the following event, the cheese rolling is famous, it attracts people nationally and globally, the hill its self is eroding, the cheese roll is free, and we wish to keep it that way, but we need money to maintain the hill every year, meaning it needs landscaping at least 4 times a year, we have volunteers, who 2 weeks before the event, have a hill clearing day, strimming, clearing the undergrowth, the hill hasn't breathed properly for years, so we have had advice that it needs the vegetation removed 3 to 4 times a year, we need to employ people to do it who know what they are doing, for the cheese roll to continue this needs to be done, our buckets do not collect anything near the amount we need, and that money is run the next years event, we are only asking for change, we would rather not ask for anything, but in 2010, we overturned an events company taking it, commercialising it, charging 20 pounds entrance fee, we won and its still free, and we want to keep it that way, 5000 will hopefully pay for 3 years treatment, which will help make the event safer, and to continue.
