From meagre beginnings of a computer and microphone tucked away in a disused storeroom CANDOFM has grown and flourished and now provides the opportunity to students, volunteers and the wider local community to engage and participate in creating content and having a say in running a radio station. Schools use technology ‘remote blogging stations’ to create and contribute radio programming in addition to work experience opportunities. CANDOFM also works as many community organisations as we can to highlight the excellent work they all do in the community whilst also co-creating the service that can be specifically characterized as ‘in the community, for the community, about the community and by the community.

The continued commitment of Furness College through significant staff, resources and financial investment has released a long planned aspiration of providing Furness local community with a strong community station ready to begin its next exciting and hugely ambitious phase.

CANDOFM has grown from a college project and is now a social enterprise (non profit company). The station is relocating to Cooke's Media and Arts Centre on Abbey Road where it can connect more intensively with local community. From here CANDOFM will be able to offer more opportunities to anyone locally that would like to get involved with a diverse range of activities…. Operation of specialist audio equipment, day to day running, administration, management and IT related duties to create content that is specifically tailored and informed by local community. Our aim is to create a truly local community radio station to generate debate on local issues, cover sport, news and current affairs and of course play the music you want to hear!

The station has been able to provide opportunities for volunteers who have benefited from learning experiences helping with confidence in speaking and listening, encouraging creative thinking, self-expression, journalism, interviewing & research skills. This is continue and improve to provide work experience opportunities and volunteering that raises aspiration and promotes employability.

Unfortunately, studios, equipment, licence fees, rent and bills all cost and we are hoping that the Furness Community will help by donating towards the costs, especially towards the costs of the new studio. Local businesses out there please take advantage of our incredibly cheap advertising rates!

If everyone in the Furness area donated JUST £1 we could run the station for nearly two years!
