Story

We’re hoping to raise £9,000 to help my mum, Sue Furness, who has just learned that she has a rare and aggressive form of Breast Cancer (known as Triple Negative). She will immediately begin a course of grueling chemotherapy, followed by surgery and radiotherapy, a treatment regime expected to last up to a year. Naturally we want to support and care for her during this emotional time. Will you help us?

For 16 years my mum followed her passion for education by working overseas as a teacher and later as an entrepreneur. Over the last 8 years she stayed in Vietnam, helping students and researching for her website blog. She was in the process of returning to England to care for her 94-year-old mum when she discovered the lump on her chest.

She took the decision to fly home immediately to be among family and friends. This interruption to her plans means she has just two suitcases of belongings with which to start her new life as a cancer patient - everything she now needs is 10,000 miles away.

Mum has worked since the age of 15 and was an NHS nurse in her early career - in the same hospital where she is now a patient. Due to having lived overseas she has been asked to pay for the initial consultation and tests, over £1,000, even though she was born in England and has paid into the system for over 40 years. She is now in England permanently, but still needs to prove this to establish residency.

It was always the plan to move back home once her enterprise was off the ground and hopefully producing revenue. Sadly, this awful disease has meant she has had to abandon her home and possessions and camp out at her elderly mother's home in Devon. Continuing working on her website (www.kidsnschools.com) may be difficult, but we are all trying to be positive, even though we know there will be tough times ahead.

These last few years have been tough for us as a family since my brother passed away in 2015, aged 40. It was especially hard for mum having to cope with the loss and grief on her own. Now, with the worry over debt and the stress of losing her home, income and business, we are all hoping and praying that the cancer does not spread.

We want to raise this money to reunite mum with her belongings, help with the cost of setting up home in England, and for transport to the hospital. Every penny we raise over the target, will be donated to FORCE Cancer Charity at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital. Please help us all you can!
