Story

We have developed a concept that inspires young people to believe in themselves, achieve their goals and dreams and enable them to lead fulfilling lives in the communities where they live. The focus of our project is based on the building of an individual's self-belief:- Our approach is to garner the good ethics and principles sport and education instils. We focus on the principles of positive learning, to ensure will the development of social skills, such as how to communicate effectively in all situations. A large proportion of the individuals that we are targeting English isn't their 1st language, so its important to enhance their grasp of English and by doing so it will enable them to not just improve the overall level of English within their homes, but also help with improved behavioural skills, personal responsibility and respect of one’s self within a team environment or as an individual participating in a individual activity. The area we have chosen has a higher unemployment rate than other areas of Manchester and many of the young people targeted come from socially low economical backgrounds coupled with the fact English isn't their first language. Since the tragic events of the callous bombing in Manchester the area has come under attack due to the high number of Muslim families. The area is home to people from all faiths and we want to build on community spirit that the young people want to develop.

We will do this by encouraging young people to learn through team & peer activities, throughout the duration of the project. The sessions are constructed to allow for both development and success also belief systems adjustment. The challenge and objective of our programme is to try and ensure that each youth takes the belief with them.

We believe that physical activities not only improve general skills that impact on overall health, but they also foster critical thinking that promotes positive attitudes. This can utilise cross transferable skills in many different environments. For instance, participation in team sports promotes good communication skills as everyone has a role and an opportunity to contribute to overall success. This impacts positively on the way different people relate to each other. It also creates a mode of thinking which draws people together, deflecting focus away from differences. Sport helps to improve self-esteem and confidence. The ultimate aim is to help develop a cultural change where a young person having a positive outlook towards life is the norm and the natural choice. The attainment of positive physical activity is just as important as functional skills and nutritional competency in order to live a quality, enriched long life.

A core component of the project is to recruit volunteers who we will train to help deliver the project and in doing so ensure that they are given the experience and qualifications to enable them to enter into the employment market with skills that make them stand out from others. These volunteers are fundamental to the project and their role of peer mentors is key to the success of the project.

How we will do this;

Through a 20 week programme, (2 hours per week) comprising of 10 weeks spilt between the sporting field and the classroom. Each week we work closely with the participates and focus on one area of sport. As well is concentrating on the physical attributes we will also focus on the mind-set which is needed to perfect that particular area of the game. This approach is mirrored in the classroom to develop self belief and informal learning, which will provide them with the necessary skills to develop as role models to others within their community
