Story
In the summer of 2018, myself and 4 friends have planned a volunteering trip to Bali, Indonesia. We will be involved in childcare volunteering, this will involve interacting with and teaching young children aged 4-9 years at a local primary school and helping promote their English language skills. As they are quite young, a lot of the interactions we will have will be through play, helping them to build their confidence socially however we will also be helping the local staff in the classrooms as educational services in the area can be quite under-provided. We will also be attending government approved community programme which essentially works in the same way as the schooling however we will be interacting with slightly older children (around 6-14) and the sessions will be planned and run by us. Our interaction with the children will have a greater impact than one might imagine as due to rapidly increasing tourism within Bali, people who have even basic knowledge of English and who can sustain even simple conversations with English speakers have far more prospects than those who don't so, essentially we would be helping the children of Bali sustain themselves and their families in the future.
Having grown up bilingual, I feel I have personally been able to reap the benefits of being able to communicate with a wide variety of people and ever since, I have had a fondness for the learning of languages. I would hope that my involvement in this project would be able to instil a love for learning the English language in these children so that maybe one day they will be able to take their education and therefore job and life prospects further more easily.
