Story
Sooty is a 4 year old labrador collie cross who has had problems with his hind legs since birth but the vets have been unable to diagnose the problem, finally after changing vets he got referred to a specialist vet who diagnosed hip dysplasia, but because it hadn't been picked up earlier the thigh muscle on the right side is non existent causing the hip joint to rub and he has now got severe osteoarthritis. The vet has said he needs a hip replacement but because of the repeated wrong diagnoses the insurance is now not going to cover the full cost even though he is insured for £7,500. He has been having hydrotherapy to try and build up the muscle to try and delay the surgery but it isn't working and he is obviously in pain so is going back to see a specialist vet to discuss surgery but it cannot be carried out unless I can raise the money. I am myself disabled and I have had knee replacements so know the pain he is going through. He is otherwise healthy but if I cannot raise the money there is only 1 other option and I do not want to think about that

4 years agoIt is now 12 weeks since Sooty's hip replacement and apart from chasing balls he is allowed to return to normal activity. He has been off lead for a couple of weeks now but had to walk by my side, but now he can run around. He seems reluctant at the moment, but I am sure it is only because I have been stopping him for so long. He is trotting at his hydrotherapy sessions

4 years agoSooty had his hip replacement this morning 10th July. Vet has contacted me to say he is fine + coming around from the anaesthetic. Hopefully he will be coming home on Friday 12th July and I will pay the money that has been raised so far. I need to continue fundraising as I am only able to pay 1/2 of the money at the moment The vet said his hip was very arthritic and he had to cut away growths so that he could fit the implant.

4 years agoAs it was getting difficult to raise the extra money to have Sooty's hip replacement performed the hydrotherapist suggested going to a training vets college locally. She's had a number of clients with the same procedure. It means he can have it performed now instead of waiting another year Sooty is having scans to make the implant Mond 17th June + the operation 2 weeks later. Thanks to everyone who donated. I had some direct donations and been doing boot sales to raise remaining money, which I will continue to do until finally paid off

I used to be a community midwife until I had to take medical retirement eventually needing both knees replaced so I know what pain Sooty is going through
