Story
Newbury and West Berkshire Speakability is for people with Aphasia - language-loss following stroke, head injury or other neurological condition. At our meetings members support each other, share experiences, make new friends, rebuild self-confidence and develop new skills. We practise communication using words, drawing, pictures and gesture. As we all understand Aphasia we can help each other build confidence and support each other to try things out. We have no funding so rely on donations.
In the past twelve months we have discussed national and local topics such as the justice system, met a Yeoman Warder, met the editor of the local newspaper, had news quizzes using photo cuttings from national andl ocal newspapers, talked about objects of interest to particular members and had singing sessions with a guitarist. Recent visits have included a trip on a canal boat on the Kennet and AvonCanal, a trip to the Mayflower Theatre to see Joseph and the AmazingTechnicoloured Dreamcoat and coffee and lunchtime outings.
