Weʼre raising £700 to support The Matthew Nicholls Foundation + Alder Hey Children's Charity
- Warrington, United Kingdom
Crowdfunding is a new type of fundraising where you can raise funds for your own personal cause, even if you're not a registered charity.
The page owner is responsible for the distribution of funds raised.
For those who don’t know me, I’m Carrie – I finished my GCSEs at Culcheth High in summer 2017 and after an unexpectedly rocky start to this academic year, I started studying a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport and Exercise Sciences at Warrington & Vale Royal College in February 2018. I love sport and exercise, and my aim is to become a secondary school PE teacher.
I have set myself the challenge of training for and running a marathon (26.2 miles) to raise money for two important charities. Unfortunately I am too young to enter an organised event (e.g. Manchester marathon); however my keenness to do the run this summer time led to me arranging my own marathon for July 2018! I'll be embarking on a carefully measured route with a supervising volunteer kindly and courageously cycling by my side. I do also hope to complete a second marathon later in 2018, once I'm 18 so able to enter an organised event.
80% of the money I raise will go to the Matthew Nicholls Foundation. Matt, my distant cousin and my mum’s godson, completely unexpectedly took his own life in July 2017, aged 24. Auntie Rachel & Uncle Rob, Matt’s parents, have set up this charity to help young people, specifically those less fortunate and financially unable, pursue their careers and dreams in music and give them the opportunity to further develop their natural talents in the music world, as Matt did– which was something very important to him. Matt had incredible natural music and song-writing skills. He was living and working in London and sharing his talent and love of music through musical performance. Matt had so much more to give therefor we want to enable Matt to live on through helping others.
The other 20% will go to the Alder Hey Children’s Charity, in memory of Patric Wilson, a student at Culcheth High School, who died of cancer in February 2016, aged 16. I have also chosen this charity in honour of my big brother, Patrick Divers, now aged 22, who received treatment from Alder Hey throughout his childhood, including providing life-saving surgery multiple times, before being moved to the adult clinics - a place he certainly wouldn't be if it wasn't for Alder Hey's ongoing work and support. It is the work, determination and commitment of Alder Hey that has given me the gift of a fantastic big brother now, and who made Patric Wilson's journey just that little bit easier.
Matt’s parents & I agreed it’d be a great tribute to our cousin, nephew, son, grandson, and treasured friend, to mark one year since Matt took his own life on 9th July last year with a significant event, therefore I’ll be running my marathon on Monday 9th July this year. This date is also just 3 days after what would have been Patric's 19th birthday, therefore is a special time. When planning my route, I’ve incorporated one landmark of significance to each person I’m running in honour or memory of. I’ll start at Stockport Grammar School (where Matt studied), pass by Old Trafford (the home of Patrick Divers’ favourite club), and finish at Culcheth High School (where Patric Wilson studied and is remembered by all as a brave & courageous young man), and where I was inspired into taking up such ambitious challenges such as this!
A message from Rachel and Rob - "Matthew was a talented musician. When he was young he took all opportunities given to him to develop his skills and confidence to share his talent. We believe that all young people, no matter what their background, should have the opportunity to access playing a musical instrument for self-development and for the pleasure of the wider community. We have set up this trust to provide opportunities and financial support for young people to develop musical skills, especially those with financial and social barriers. We will be working in collaboration with local services to ensure that young people with life challenges and musical potential benefit from the money raised".
If you will pledge some money to these two great causes, I will pledge my time and energy in preparing for this ambitious event! Thank you for your support.
