Story

Carrie Young (in the stripey top in this 2015 picture) joined Emily's Walking Book Club just after it began and was a lively and loyal member before her untimely illness and death in August 2021. I would like to use September's "Mrs Palfrey at the Claremont" walk to raise money for a memorial bench for Carrie at Chapmans Green, near her home in North London. This was a book that Carrie loved, and you can hear her talking about it when we were on Radio 4's Ramblings with Clare Balding, HERE .

Here is a little more about Carrie and the Chapmans Green rewilding project from her dear friend Cynthia:

Carrie taught in a number of London Boroughs for over forty years and after retiring, she became involved in many local projects. She volunteered in schools, the local history society, community meals projects and helped to create the Friends of Chapmans Green which was formed to give an overlooked green space some love and affection. One ambition was to rewild the disused bowling Green allowing it to revert to a meadow whilst adding an orchard. Rewinding is well on the way and fruit trees will be planted this Autumn.

Carrie was a lovely giving person who will be remembered for her generosity, kindness, intelligence, humour and wit. She loved her family and friends, rock concerts, books, the theatre, festivals, parties in her home, football, her cats and her bright yellow Nissan Juke -Zippy.

We miss her.
