I have been given a brilliant opportunity to further my education and make a difference by travelling to Honduras, Central America in July 2020.

As part of this two week expedition, I will be completing vital studies on the carbon, biodiversity and community benefits of the rainforest. I will be working alongside scientists retrieving data of forest measurements and doing surveys on invertebrate, bird, herpetofauna, mammal and bats to monitor changes in community structure and to find out what and where different viruses and infections are occurring from in populations in the tropical rainforest. I will be travelling through a cloud-top mountain which contains species that are not found anywhere else on the globe due to living conditions. The expedition also explores the effects of climate change in the rainforests and could find ways to help reduce climate change throughout the world using the results found from the plant and tree surveys completed. For the second week of my expedition, I will complete a Caribbean coral reef ecology course which teaches identification of different species of coral and major reef-associated fish species. The course introduces a variety of methods and practices used for scientific research in the marine environment and gathers even more vital information on the communities in the ocean and will help scientists to find ground-breaking information on fish and coral species.

The expedition would greatly benefit my studies and increase my knowledge of biology and ecology as a whole and would support a charity in their vital ongoing research which they have completed annually since 2003. Operation Wallacea is a fantastic charity which also aims to teach local people to use the rainforests in a sustainable way, therefore preserving it for its natural inhabitants.
