Story

We are Adam & Catherine, the parents of Alice and Mia Little. In March 2025, we faced the devastating loss of our precious newborn daughter, Mia Florence.

After what we had believed to be a healthy and textbook second pregnancy, everything unfortunately changed in February 2025. A routine growth scan at 32 weeks revealed some complications that had not been detected prior. Naively, we believed this would mean delivering early and spending a few weeks in the Neonatal Unit before taking our baby home to meet her big sister, Alice. Sadly, that wasn’t to be.

In just a matter of weeks, our world had been flipped on its head. We had gone from reaching the third trimester, excited to be expanding our family and blissfully unaware of what our future actually held, to having very serious and difficult conversations. Complications left us with a decision no parent should ever have to face - a termination for medical reasons or to continue with the pregnancy, despite the very poor prognosis. Our baby's undiagnosed condition perplexed every specialist that we met and with so many unanswered questions and inconclusive scans, we felt that we had no choice but to continue with the pregnancy, holding onto every shred of hope. We owed it to our baby to give her the best chance that we could.

At 37 weeks, our beautiful baby girl was delivered and we spent a few precious seconds with her before she was taken away from us to receive the specialist care that she desperately needed. 33 hours later, we devastatingly held our Mia in our arms for the very first and very last time as she passed away, surrounded by so much love. We then dressed her, read her a story and said our utterly heart-breaking final goodbyes.

Mia received exceptional care from specialists in both life and in death and because of this, we are raising funds in her name to help the Neonatal team at Royal Stoke Hospital continue their vital work supporting babies and families in critical need. Individual doctors and nurses who cared for Mia played a part in making such a distressing and traumatic time that little bit gentler and we will forever be grateful for this. We also would like to support other bereaved parents who, like us, have experienced the unimaginable pain of leaving the hospital with a memory box instead of a precious newborn baby.

Every donation, no matter the size, will help provide life-saving care to babies in need and, we hope, offer a small amount of comfort to other families deeply grieving the loss of their baby.

Although Mia’s life was far too short, we hope that, through our fundraising online and hosting a charity event at our family pub, her name can leave a lasting legacy and offer comfort to others, whilst keeping our little girl’s memory alive.

We thank you for your support in helping us honour our baby girl, Mia Florence Little.
