UPDATE *** UPDATE *** UPDATE *** UPDATE *** UPDATE *** UPDATE
Cassie's big day is getting ever closer! She's still in training - although she's meant to be resting up! On the 17th July she did 42.5 miles, cycling for over 3 hours - check out our updates!
Cassie did two big sportives earlier this month in preparation for her big coast to coast challenge for Cat Rescue in just over 4 weeks time. Here is her report:
'6th June was the Yorkshire Corker which was a 63mile cycle around some very hilly parts of York including a 17% uphill climb (see video link in page update).
13th June was Belles of Belvoir sportive which was 58 miles long with some women I have never met before but spent lockdown racing virtually with them so it was a great opportunity to meet them in real life whilst training for the big event. Unfortunately this didn't end well as we were reminded how dangerous cycling can be when one of the ladies had a bad accident and ended up in hospital for 3 nights, good news is she is recovering well now.'
In between these rides Cassie has also done some smaller (so SHE says - BUT 30 MILES doesn't seem small to us) training rides. Cassie is sacrificing her day to day life to do intense training ready for this event with a significant number of hours spent in the saddle (and who wants to do that?!!!) All sponsorship will be gratefully received.
In the run up to the event we will continue to update on her training progress and of course will post regular updates the weekend of her event!
28/04/2021 UPDATE - WE ARE NOW A HAND REAR GANG OF SEVEN!
So, everything changed today - the eagle eyed amongst you will note that we now have SEVEN hand rear babies. The Pandemic Jinx struck again!
We took in a little black feral cat from another local rescue because they were full. She was heavily pregnant and had already been through the necessary trauma of being trapped and then a visit to the vet.
She arrived late last Friday night and it quickly became apparent that she was totally feral so we gave her lots of space and minimised the time spent in her pen. On Monday morning she gave birth to 2 babies, one reasonably sized one and a tiny stillborn baby. Later that evening she gave birth to one more stillborn baby. She was settled but of course we couldn't examine her. Tuesday evening she gave birth to a very, very tiny live baby. I kept going out to check her throughout the night and was able to change the bedding and take a quick look at the baby, who seemed healthy. By 530am it was clear that something wasn't quite right - mum had been prolifically sick and had severe diarrhoea, by 630am she was starting to lose blood. The result was us once more trapping her into a crush cage where it became apparent that she had had a prolapse. She was rushed to Calcaria Vet by Amanda Quinlan for emergency surgery.
Vet Paul advised that she had prolapsed both horns and there was trauma to the area. Whilst under life-saving surgery she was FeLV and FiV negative tested, she was chipped, and, of course, spayed. She is still in danger of peritonitis which would be life threatening. We will do our best for her.
In the meantime her tiny babies are in the incubator and have joined the Biker 5 in the house for feeding every hour.
We will update when we can, but please cross everything for this little family!
FUNDRAISER BACKGROUND:
Our home is in York, where we can house up to 22 cats and kittens at any given time. Every single cat that arrives with us is given the chance to find a new home - however long that takes - we have a no euthanise policy unless there is absolutely no hope due to illness.
Every adult we take in is tested for FeLV and FiV, neutered, vaccinated and microchipped, along with a worming and flea treatment program. This is heavily subsidised by rescue, as is neutering for all kittens that are homed too young to neuter.
Our vet bill for 2020 was over £12k, and we desperately need to raise funds to get through 2021.
Last year we spent 16 weeks hand rearing various litters which takes an immense amount of resilience on the part of the person hand rearing - but is also incredibly costly.
We were unable to do our usual fundraisers due to lockdown but still managed to home 152 cats and kittens during the 2020 Pandemic.
Cassie Webster has spent most of 2020 training to do the event of a lifetime - she will be cycling from Morecambe to Bridlington over 2 days - this is a 170 MILES with 7332ft of ascent!!!
The Way of the Roses 2 day event will take place in July 2021 and is a seriously challenging event and not for the faint hearted (nor the unfit or unprepared!)
Cassie will be raising funds for CRWT all the way - please, please support. Such an immense amount of effort has gone into this fundraiser, she deserves to make a mint for us!
I'm currently hand-rearing yet again - alongside Cassie I will be updating you on the biking 5 - names to be shared soon!
