Story
Samuel's family moved to the UK from Zimbabwe in 2000. Samuel attended school here and has lived here ever since. He, his mother and his three younger siblings have made England their home.
Initially, Samuel's family was granted temporary leave to remain. When this ended, Samuel's mother applied for indefinite leave to remain for herself and her 4 children. It was granted for herself and the three younger children. Later they all became British citizens. However, Samuel, having technically reached adulthood, was refused.
Samuel's only way to remain in England amongst his family and friends was to claim asylum. However, he does not easily meet the asylum criteria set by the government. Now he could be put in a detention centre, or deported back to a country he barely remembers.
The good news is that the Home Office will reconsider Samuel's claim for leave to remain. The Home Office has accepted that Samuel is part of the family, and that they had previously granted him leave to remain on that basis. His lawyer believes he has a good case.
Unfortunately, this is not covered by legal aid. The cost of his application to the Home Office is just over 1000 pounds. Legal fees will be 1,500 pounds and there is a further 500 NHS surcharge payable: a total of just over 3000 pounds. As an asylum-seeker Samuel does not have money to pay these fees and legal costs, and he is not permitted to work.
We are trying to raise 3000 pounds, which would almost cover the legal costs of Samuel's application for leave to remain in the UK with his family and friends. Please can you help?
