This is our son Tommy he is 4 years old.
Two days before Tommys 3rd birthday he was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy

Duchenne muscular dystrophy is a muscle wasting disease affecting 1 in every 3500 male births
Approximately 100 boys are born with DMD in the UK each year.

Boys who have DMD experience progressive muscle weakness starting in the lower limbs
between the ages of 6 and 11 there is a steady decline in muscle function confining them to wheelchairs by around the age of 12
The upper body is then affected which causes heart and lung issues
Life expectancy for a child diagnosed with DMD is currently 27
But since Tommys diagnosis 19 months ago we have been given a lot of hope by the number of new treatments at clinical trial stage.
There really is a lot of good work being done to try to find an adequate treatment for what is the biggest genetic killer of children worldwide.

Tommy starts his (mainstream)school in September 2017
He has been taking steroids for 6 months and we have seen massive physical gains but we are well aware these will not last forever as I have described above.
At some point during his time at primary school he will to need to upgrade from his manual wheelchair to an electric one,along with the obvious physical aspect we feel it is also vital to Tommys independence and confidence to be able to move around freely rather than being pushed by mum/dad/carer.
