Story

Charlie has prostate cancer. He has been very unlucky because this type of cancer accounts for less than 1% of all reported malignancies in dogs. It also usually affects dogs that are intact. Research in this area is therefore limited.

We have had Charlie since he was six weeks old. He is now ten. He is the gift that keeps on giving. He brings a smile to all he meets.

Charlie needs chemotherapy to prolong his life. Up to now he has had pioneering inter-arterial chemotherapy which cost £2,500 and one round of intravenous chemotherapy which costs £250 each time he has it. We are advised that he needs this treatment every two weeks. Charlie is insured but we are coming to the very end of this pot of money.

Charlie is well in every other aspect. He is lively and joyous with a real lust for life. He chases the ball just like any other dog, and jumps around when someone walks through the door. He has a good, healthy appetite and looks fit and well. If you were to meet him, you would never know that he was poorly. Unfortunately, he is though, and without his medication we have no option but to watch him deteriorate.

Charlie has responded very well to his chemotherapy. His observable symptoms have disappeared and we hope that giving him the inter-arterial chemotherapy may have significantly reduced his tumour. It may even cure it, who knows? That would be momentous in the world of veterinary science. The first dog to survive prostate cancer.

We are asking for anyone who loves dogs to help Charlie. The money that we raise will be used to pay his vet fees and anything over, come that day, will go to two charities: National Canine Cancer Foundation and Cancer Research UK.

We are aware that there are many, many other causes that would benefit from your donation and we hope that their dreams come true but if you would like to support a four legged friend please help to give Charlie his chance.

Read about Charlie in his blog, we hope that it raises awareness and makes you smile.
