Story

Belle is a 7 year old girl who was diagnosed with Rett Syndrome in April 2015. Rett Syndrome is a genetic disorder that effects brain development. Resulting in severe mental and physical disability. It’s estimated to effect 1 on 12,000 girls born each year and is rarely seen in males. Previous to diagnosis Belle was born healthy and developed within the normal range. It was then noticeable that Belle’s behaviour and temperament was changing. She was agitated and her overall development slowed down. She attended Little Peoples Nursery who were supportive to Belle and her family. Ongoing assessments lead to the appointment where a Pediatrician noticed signs of Rett and discussed about genetic blood tests. Belle had the blood tests and was finally given a diagnosis. Mixed emotions for the family good to have a diagnosis for belle however very upsetting for the family for the long term effects. Belle mobility started to deteriate, she started sherbrook primary school in 2016 and has on going problems with mobility, belle stuffers with epileptic seizures and spends alot of time in and out if hospital which has an impact on her and her family. Belles is cared for mainly by her Mom who has to carry her up and downstairs, shower her in a cubicle shower aswell as dress and undress her on her hospital bed upstairs. Belle has alot of seizures and is always very drowsy afterwards, she needs rest and monitoring as it takes a while for her to recover. This is hard if she is in her room upstairs as Belle has 2 younger siblings that also need Mom‘s attention. This is why we are fundraising for a downstairs bedroom and wet room.
