Don't have time to donate right now?
Story
Summer 2013 ,a small group of friends decided to contribute in a small way to help those who had badly affected by the economical crisis that had hit Spain in recent years. The country does not offer the many types of benefits that you can find in others, you can only apply for unemployment benefit for a certain amount of time, and the employment law provides tax privileges to those who employ people in their early 20s. Therefore most families survive thank to the many charitable associations that provide food, shelter and support in many other ways, and that have seen themselves overwhelmed in recent years.
The idea was to rescue some of all those books that get thrown away every year, due to the lack of charity and second hand shops in the country, and sell them, for a small price. The money raised would be donated to Cáritas Madrid, one of the many charities that work with the needy.
Thanks to an amazing back up from the press and the public alike, they collected 25,000 books in just 3 months, among them some quite unique ones. The Market took place for just the two days in the iconic indoors market Mercado de La Cebada in Madrid town centre, and they managed to raised 1,800 euros.
The event got so popular that it had to be organised up to five more times and ended having a permanent stall on the first floor of the market that has been running since June 2014. Not only raising money for charity but also rescuing thousand of books that, otherwise, would have been destroyed.
Their stall opens everyday Monday to Saturday in the market, a market that has helping them enormously by offering us a stall free of charge and supporting every single one of our activities, as well as giving us fresh food when needed.
All the money they raised is spent on food that is given to organisations that provide food, clothes and much more to families with small children. homeless and pensioners.
The new market manager has decided to cancel their contract. Therefore, to carry on their charity work as well as to preserve those books that they have in stock, they have been forced to hire one of the privately owned stall within the premises. They need to raise 600 euros to cover the expenses of the first couple of months until the new found sponsors' money starts coming in.
Please help this amazing group of volunteers by donating as little or as much as you can. Thank you.
