Story

The team within Extended Learning Sandwick have committed themselves to raising funds for a purpose built Rebound Therapy Trampoline which will be based within Sandwick.

The cost for a Rebound Therapy Trampoline is approx. £4000

Currently there are two Rebound Therapy trampolines based in Lochs School and Stornoway Sports Centre. Accessing these for the children and young people who are based in Sandwick School and within ELR can be problematic due to the availability of the trampoline through the school day and holidays, having Rebound Therapy trained staff available at specific times and the logistics and costs associated with transport.

Having a Rebound Therapy Trampoline based within Sandwick would allow for easier accessibility for opportunities and movement, therapeutic exercise and recreation for the children and young people who have a whole spectrum of needs for when they actually need it rather than when we can book it for them!

Currently there are two staff members based in ELR have successfully completed their Rebound Therapy training however we would like more staff to be trained.

Benefits of Rebound Therapy for the children and young people - Include the development and improvement of:

• Communication

• Co-ordination

• Independence

• Self – Confidence

• Balance

• Muscle Tone

• Body Awareness

• Social Awareness

• Trust and Confidence

• Consideration of others

• Patience

• Peer Support

• Fun and Enjoyment

It would be an amazing resource to have based within Sandwick to teach, promote, embrace and ultimately maximise these essential skills for our young people. How are we going to raise the funds?

6 ELR Staff members have signed up to take part on 31st August in the physically challenging BEAST Race along Loch Ness.

The event is a physically challenging 10k, 25+ Obstacle Course over tough Scottish terrain. Obstacles include giant water slides, icy loch water and swamp crossings.

Not only will this event be raising funds for the Trampoline but registration fees already paid by staff taking part in the event will go towards supporting Chest Heart and Stroke Scotland.

Staff have committed themselves to taking part in a training regime in their personal time from now until August to ensure the challenge of the BEAST is a success.

As the trampoline is for the children and young people we felt it was incredibly important to include them in the challenge.

The children will take part in Mini Beast Obstacle Course which will take place as Sandwick . We will be encouraging staff, parents and carers to take part in the event to on the day.
