Story
On the weekend of 15 March 2019, Cheney School was the victim of racist graffiti on one of its external school walls. The graffiti was quickly removed but the incident left the whole school community shocked and saddened.
In response to this offensive and unacceptable act, a group of inspiring year 11 students wrote a letter to the school stating that they'd like to create a mural to put up on the same spot as the graffiti appeared to celebrate the schools diverse and inclusive community. You can see the letter here. We are incredibly proud of our students for such a mature response and for a response which celebrates our inclusive and welcoming community. Our teachers and staff have already started to offer their ideas and support for the mural project, including using our creative writing poetry workshops allowing students to contribute powerful words as well as powerful images.
To make this suggestion a reality, and to fully cover the costs of this inspiring project, we are reaching out to our local community to see if they may be able to help fund it.
Costs include materials, staffing to support the students to create the mural, a plaque to go next to the mural, an unveiling ceremony and any costs associated with putting it up.
We thank you in advance for your generosity and in support in making this request a reality.
