Story
While many people may be revelling in the festivities in the lead up to Christmas, those who are sleeping rough on the streets don’t have the same luxury.
Providing homeless, vulnerable and lonely people with care and support is an important course of action throughout the year, not just during the festive period.
However, with Christmas widely regarded as the season of giving and spending time with loved ones, lending a helping hand to someone in need around this time of year can have an especially huge impact.
We are looking to raise funds to enable us to help our societies most needy at Christmas! Through your support we will be able to provide people who are currently experiencing homelessness and adults who would otherwise be alone at Christmas, with a free warm, safe place to eat and enjoy Christmas!
Not only will be feeding the homeless, we will also be giving out food hampers to needy families and offering a befriending service to the elderly / lonely.
Last year a chatline for lonely elderly was overwhelmed as 5,000 calls went unanswered over Christmas ! In some cases, callers waited for almost 20 minutes for an answer because they were so desperate to hear a human voice.
Hear some of our testimonials from recent campaigns:
Sally said: “We would like to thank you all, you made life bearable when we thought we were a lost cause whether that was a cup of tea, a hug, a smile and some friendly company. Of course the covid-19 shopping parcel helped our family more than anyone could believe but it was the kind hearted team that made the biggest impact to our lives. Your support means that our financial difficulties are solved for the time being and we’d like to give something back by volunteering and donating something back”
Carol volunteers each week to visit Ivan, who is 83, diabetic and losing his eyesight. Ivan spends his day at home, where Carol visits him for 1 hour every week. Carol has been volunteering as a befriender for Cherishers 811 since August 2018. It is her first volunteering role and she became a volunteer because she wanted to do something different and to help people. Carol has worked all her life in the care sector and was also an officer in the Salvation Army until she moved to Rugeley from Aberdeen.
Carol is a lively, active person with a great sense of humour. She says her secret is to: “treat each day as a new day.”
Carol says: “For the first 10 minutes I just sit and listen to Ivan. Sometimes he is a bit low and recently he has been getting more depressed, so I like to listen and gauge how he is feeling before starting to chat. I like to talk to him about ‘silly things’, something that will lighten his mood and take his mind off his daily situation. I think he looks forward to me coming and he usually ends our visit with a smile on his face and happier than when I arrived.” "I enjoy volunteering and am glad I can make a difference."
By donating you are enabling us to make a massive impact in the lives of our societies most needy. We thank you for standing with us in making a positive difference this Christmas!
