Story
Thank you for visiting my JustGiving page!
I am currently in my third year of studying Psychology at Glasgow Caledonian University. I have learned a multitude of skills which enables me to help improve psychological care for those in need.
Why Sri Lanka?
Many of you will remember the Boxing Day tsunami in 2004 which rocked the Indian Ocean and devastated its nearby coastlines. One of which is Sri Lanka where they are still trying to rebuild from this disaster.
Sri Lanka has only recently ended their 25 year civil war which destroyed the country and still has strong emotional and physical consequences on those left to rebuild.
Currently, there is a mental health crisis in Sri Lanka where they do not have a skilled enough workforce in mental health for the population. There is only one psychiatrist available for every 500,000 people in Sri Lanka.
What I am going to do -
As of the 4th of June, I am joining a team of volunteers in Sri Lanka for 6 weeks. I will be doing this with SLV and its partnership charity, Samutthana, the King's College London resource centre for trauma, displacement and mental health in Sri Lanka.
During my time with SLV, I will take part in numerous projects to help the local people. I will use my skills learned at University to work in a mental health facility, a rehabilitation centre, community outreach projects, projects for those with special needs and also projects for the locals. I will use my specific experience and knowledge to run therapeutic activities with inpatients and outpatients to inspire enhanced wellbeing, confidence and help speed up their recovery.
What happens with any donations?
Any money raised will help the Sri Lankan family who will welcome me and other volunteers into their home, help fund the placements and projects I work on, ensure the continuation of SLV's crucial work and its project workers, help fly me out to Sri Lanka and allow me to get the vaccinations I need to work in such an environment.
The smallest donation amount on JustGiving is £2! The volunteering fees are £1550 alone, then the flight and vaccinations are another £1000+, therefore any donations, ideas and input are welcomed!
I am also going to do some events to fundraise for this, ideas are welcomed!!
If you want to find out more about the incredible organisation I am volunteering for, here is their website: SLV (www.slv.global/)
Thank you so much!
