Story

I have chosen to set this page up for my oldest friend Chiara, 25-year-old who has been suffering for 4.5 years with CRPS in both lower legs but only recently diagnosed. Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) is a poorly understood condition in which a person experiences persistent severe and debilitating pain. This condition is already spreading through Chiara's legs and can continue to spread through the body. Unfortunately the condition is uncurable at this time. It has developed so bad over the years that no amount of medication helps and there is no escape or ease from the agonising pain. Any touch or movement causes further pain and discomfort for her. Chiara developed this life changing problem from an injury caused in the Army, doing what she loved. But has now been medically discharged due to the condition. Left unpaid, no more help and no financial support.

Chiara amazes me every day with her strength and determination to face this condition and accept what this illness has taken from this once outgoing, active and full of life person. This has not only changed her life but it has also changed her family’s life.

She struggles and can not carry out basic daily tasks that we would normally take for granted. Due to her high doses of medication and severe pain levels most of the time she can't even move, string sentences together or lead a life. Personally, I had no idea the human body was capable of producing this much pain. It is genuinely heart breaking to see our friend in this much pain, discomfort and nothing of a normal life. As a result of this she needs constant help and care.
The number of drugs she is on will eventually mess up her body, but she cannot manage daily without her prescribed medication.

Adaptations have been made to the house to make her daily living a little easier, however hasn’t been provided with specialised wheelchairs to help with gaining mobility.
She is currently left disabled and unable to work whilst still in constant pain. Due to the condition agressively spreading this is now leading to double amputation.

I am hoping for this page to help her get the specialised chairs she needs and the private appointments to speed up the amputation process to help save her knees and upper legs. This all comes at a cost, so we have no alternative other than to turn for your help anyway you can.

Thank you

Chiara is still so overwhelmed by all the support she has received and how successfull the 12 hour sponsored netball event went. Chiara is in with middlesbrough's pain clinic end of march before then meeting with the surgeon again. She is also awaiting an appointment for liverpool crps team to be made. All as she can do in the meantime is carry on as best she can day to day.

Chiara has met with the pre & post amputation team. The surgeon and the team have advised that they think due to thw height of the CRPS that to get rid of the affected area and to be able to have the roght stump for prosthetics that above the knee amputation will be required. Chiara meets with her surgeon again soon to clarify and decide what will be best for her.

So Chiara has already met the oethopedic surgeon and is awaiting appointments to see other specialists before the operation can go ahead. She has had her review from the infusion and sadly this has had 0 effect for her. Her Rheumotologist can't offer anymore now as she has tried everything they have to offer. She meets again with her surgeon in October where the operation will then be booked if everything goes to plan.

I am one of Chiara's eldest friends, we have grown up together and since the injury I have seen her deteriate and loose so much independence. So I decided I wanted to try and help a little more by setting up this page help spread awareness of the rare condition CRPS.
