This January, I'm gong to Chios, a Greek island next to the Turkish coast harbouring thousands of refugees.

I'll be working for a couple of months with Be Aware and Share (BAAS: http://www.baas-schweiz.ch/), a small Swiss-based organisation helping at critical focal points on European refugee routes.

BAAS currently run several schools on Chios, offering English and Maths teaching to children.

The UNHCR estimates that over 1.75 million refugee children are not in primary school education. 1.95 million adolescent refugees are not in secondary education.

BAAS seeks to ensure that those who arrive on Chios can be offered some level of education whilst detained by governments and authorities.

Sadly, recent events on Chios has made the work of BAAS and other charities all the more difficult. Attacks by the far-right political party 'Golden Dawn' have left the camps in Chios burning and have restricted access to education facilities. A saddening report on these abusive and discriminatory attacks can be found on the Be Aware and Share Facebook page.

So this Christmastide, before travelling to Greece, I am hoping to raise some money for this organisation. None of the funds raised will be spent on my own transport or upkeep; 100% of it will go to those in need.
