Story
Since March this year more than 2,000 refugees have been stranded on the Greek island of Chios in desperate conditions. Following the EU-Turkey readmission agreement, thousands of people, most of whom have fled war zones, are living in constant limbo, unsure whether or not they will be deported.
In two weeks time I will be joining a Swiss charity in Chios called 'Be Aware And Share' to volunteer. For months, the team's focus has been on the school and the youth centre on the Island near the Turkish coast where there are currently around 170 children aged between 6 and 18 years old attending the school per week, and 100 youths aged between 12 and 20 years old attending the youth centre. The team is made up of teachers, musicians, artists, nurses and social workers.
My role will as a volunteer will include looking after the children and youth in general while also spending time preparing and realising Project classes.
The money raised here will be used to buy education and artistic materials, with any money left over being donated directly to the charity. My own personal costs such as travel and food are covered by myself.
I am very much looking forward to joining the team in Chios. Anything you can donate would be so greatly appreciated by myself and the charity.
