As many of you know I spent time working with a charity called Therapies Unite last year. TU is a charity based in Puerto Vallarta, México that works with children and adults with disabilities to provide them with access to equipment, healthcare and rehabilitation services that they would otherwise not be able to afford. TU's main goal is to make long lasting differences to the lives of disabled people in México, many of whom live without basic equipment, therapy and support. For this reason, they focus much their work on education. We worked closely with the patient and their families as well as caregivers, teachers and medical professionals to enable the development of rehabilitation services and maximize independence and quality of life. The lack of basic resources available to these people is astonishing.

TU work with all ages, all disabilities and most importantly they work with existing centres, schools and organisations to help support them to develop their rehabilitation services. TU provide access to free therapy such as swimming, cycling and dance as well as running free therapy based courses and providing free specialist medical equipment to those in need. I enjoyed every minute of my trip and worked harder than I ever thought I could.

After spending time with these inspiring patients, making wheelchairs in a new clinic we set up and providing various forms of physiotherapy I decided I'd get moving to raise money. One of the projects we undertook in México was working with an adapted sports team, with disabled athletes who often need specialised kit and treatment. We worked with them in the pool and on the track. I thought I'd take a leaf out of their book and I have signed up for a triathlon in London where I'm currently based and a marathon back home in Dublin. I'm training hard to raise much needed funds so that Therapies Unite, a small charity can continue their great work.
