Story

At Chloe Stewart Collective, we support the creation of high-quality, handmade products by women in Kenya who face barriers to employment.

Our Mission:

At the Chloe Stewart Collective, our mission is to forge a positive pathway out of poverty for women in Nairobi who face barriers to work. We do this by teaching traditional hand-embroidery skills to local women, unlocking their potential to earn a sustainable income. Our work takes place in the Kayole district, which is a low-income neighbourhood in the city of Nairobi, Kenya. A large number of residents in Kayole are unemployed, live in poverty, and can barely raise $1 a day. Our work is focused specifically on the smaller neighbourhood of Kayole Soweto, an informal settlement which has historically been plagued by criminal gangs, kidnappings, armed robberies and child trafficking. This instability, combined with general social issues or poverty and lack of education, has rendered many families unemployable, especially widows and women-led households. We work closely with local partners, including the SkyLit Centre, funded by UCESCO Africa, to equip local women with the skills they need to generate a decent and sustainable income.

Our Work:

Chloe Stewart Collective is a social enterprise that teaches hand embroidery to women who face barriers to work and lack economic opportunities. Our vibrant aesthetic draws inspiration from both Kenyan and British culture, and we cherish quality craftsmanship. We take pride in breaking away from the world of fast production and preserving the beautiful art of hand embroidery. When you buy from us, you aren’t just investing in a beautiful hand-stitched product. You are becoming part of a greater story of social impact, positive change and the empowerment of women. Every purchase from us weaves you into the fabric of a larger story – one of social change, that instils hope in the community and provides independence for women. Alongside our embroidery projects, your support funds English and accountancy classes, maternal health education, and art workshops for children.

Your Money:

All funds raised will go directly towards supporting the education of the Chloe Stewart Collective women’s children by covering school fees, uniforms, and essential school supplies. In Kayole, where many families live on less than $1 a day, the cost of education can be a major barrier, with school fees averaging $60 per child each term. By helping to ease this financial burden, we hope to ensure that children can attend school regularly and continue learning in a safe, supportive environment—opening up opportunities for a more secure future.
