On the 19th May, we received the most devastating news that my brother Callum, at the age of 27, has stage 4 gastro-oesophageal cancer.

Prior to this Cal was extremely healthy; regularly climbing mountains and running half marathons. His symptoms started a few months ago with difficulty swallowing. After several trips to the doctors and being told to assume it was a stomach ulcer, we found out the most shocking news that there was a tumour between the junction of his oesophagus and his stomach.

Oesophageal cancer effects 9000 people per year in the UK, who are all mostly over the age of 75. The cruellest most unimaginable thing about this cancer is that by the time you get symptoms, the cancer is advanced.

At first we were told it may be operable within two weeks, however another blow hit us after the PET scan revealed it had spread, making the tumour inoperable and the cancer incurable so our only treatment option would be to receive palliative chemo to extend life.

Since coming out of hospital, where Cal was tube fed for 2 weeks due to losing 10kg, he has come on leaps and bounds. After having one session of low dose chemo, his appetite and energy levels have increased, the tube is gone and he’s eating 2000cals+ a day!

We also recently received some great news that Cals cancer is HER2 positive which has opened up another treatment option using a targeted drug therapy (Herceptin) through the NHS. Due to him coping so well to his first treatment, he has been offered full dose HCX chemo due to start on the 7th July.

With the improvements Cal is making everyday, we believe more treatment options will be opened up to us and have been exploring every possible option so we can act quickly when the time is right.

We have been overwhelmed with love and support and people have been asking how they can help so we are asking our friends and family to make a small donation towards future treatments that will help Cal on this journey.

After already paying thousands towards having the the tumour biopsy sent to Belgium for genetic testing, private consultations at The Christies, private oncology meetings, alternative treatments and medicines, nutritional therapists, functional medicine practitioners and counselling etc, all donations will give Callum the chance he deserves to fight this and provide him with the best quality of life.

We are unsure where this journey will lead us but we have a fantastic team of specialists around us guiding us through the best course of treatment and we want to be ready to face and fund anything that’s thrown at us whether it’s attending a cancer clinic in Germany, immunotherapy drugs or maybe even surgery.

Anyone who knows Cal knows how kind, caring and selfless he really is and truly deserves this chance as there needs to be more Cals in the world. The kindest soul, the life of the party and the most positive person I’ve ever met!

Cal, myself and my whole family massively appreciate any help and support we can get right now as we’re all ready to fight this and stand by Cals side every step of the way.

Over the next few months, we’ll be organising some fundraisers to support Cal and I’ll be updating his progress using this page.

I cannot put into words how much this means to me and my family. Any donation big or small or even just sharing this page would mean the world to us.

Thank you so much, wishing everyone health and happiness!

Lots of love, The Powell's xxx

      6. For the rest of my life, I will be raising money for the oesophageal-gastric research fund at The Christie’s in the hope that the next person to receive the devastating news will have more treatment options available to them and hopefully one day a cure. If anybody knows anyone who has been diagnosed and would like any information/contacts of people/places we found so useful and comforting during Cals journey reach out to us as we would be more than happy to help!Wishing everyone a happy, healthy 2023, merry Christmas from the Powell’s xxx

Cal benefited from having Herceptin for 7 months before becoming resistance. 7 months we filled with great memories. We had hoped that Cal would join a clinical trial for a new immune therapy drug which unfortunately didn’t open in time before his treatment stopped working. Cal then received his final line of treatment in March which was a chemotherapy that really took a toll on his body.

      4. The 5 year survival rate is less than 5% unlike other cancers such as blood cancer which is 70% therefore, an improvement in funding these cancers is in urgent need. The Christie OG research group was set up in 2007 and has since then become one of the global leaders in OG cancer research. As well as leading major global trials, there are two main focuses to the research where donations and funding are used… 1. New cancer treatments 2. Understanding the role nutrition has to play in OG cancer
