“Let’s Do It - Victoria Wood Memorial Appeal”

TARGET RAISED FROM £20,000 to £30,000 to meet full cost of sculptor fee, casting, transportation, fixing.

Hi! I’m Victoria Wood’s brother Chris. Along with my other two sisters, we were brought up in Bury in Lancashire and went to school in the town. I’ve set up this Crowdfunding site to raise money for a permanent memorial to Victoria to be put up in Bury. This would be a fitting tribute to a hugely talented writer and performer, and would be a magnet for you Victoria Wood fans to visit and have your selfies taken.
My idea is to have a lifelike statue of Victoria, either as Bren from dinnerladies in her canteen smock, or as Kimberley’s friend in mac and beret (“Ave you seen ‘er?” sketch). You can now vote for which character you want via http://www.bury.gov.uk/victoria
Bury Council, while unable to pay towards the statue, has agreed to provide a site in the town centre (Library Gardens, Silver Street) and to do ongoing maintenance. I am also grateful to the Bury Times (the first newspaper I ever wrote for!) for “pushing the boat out” and suggesting this great idea.
Every penny raised from this site will go towards the Victoria Wood Memorial: none of us involved will draw any expenses whatsoever. The total cost may well be over £30,000, but don’t let that put you off. In due course we hope to have fund-raising packs and ideas to help you raise cash. And if you do hold any fund-raising events, invite me along - I will come if I can.

The Victoria Wood statue in Bury will be based on “Bren” from her tv sitcom dinnerladies. In the on-line poll run by Bury Council, Bren gained 60 per cent of the vote with “Kimberley’s Friend” getting 40 per cent. The sculptor will be chosen shortly from a list of 15 who have expressed interest in doing the work, and it’s hoped the statue will be unveiled in May/June next year.

Great News! Dame Judi Dench has donated £1,000 to the appeal (I've got her permission to make her gift public). This takes us past the £10,000 mark and also means 400 people have contributed so far! Keep up the good work, and circulate it as much as possible. Again, my sincere thanks to all who have contributed thus far.

An Anonymous Victoria Wood fan has just donated £500 to take our total to over £9,000 - fantastic! But every donation is much appreciated. Keep it going folks, and spread the word!
