Story

I am a nurse currently working in a medical practice in Surrey and have always wanted to volunteer overseas but hadn't found a way to achieve it while continuing with my job in the UK.

I attended a travel health conference about three years ago and was inspired by a presentation given by a nurse who had the idea of starting an outreach programme in which health care staff volunteer for 2 weeks to work in clinics in Kenya.

In parts of rural Kenya around 70% of people live below the poverty line with often limited or non existent access to proper sanitation, clean drinking water or healthcare.

Medical facilities are very poor with inadequate staff and equipment to treat the local population.

The outreach clinics provide :-

Treatment and screening for common tropical diseases such as malaria and infestations.

Treatment of minor illnesses

Health education including teaching of first aid.

Eye screening and treatment of conditions such as cataracts.

Family planning and sexual health advice.

Since the project began in 2010 over 27,000 people have received medical care , treatment and education in these clinics.

In November I will be joining a group travelling with Camps International to a camp 50 km south of Mombassa and am very much looking forward to the challenge . Before I go , I am hoping to be able to raise some funds to help with the cost of the trip and to buy medical equipment and supplies to take along.

Thank you so much for your interest and support.
