Story
The Scotland Team has been fortunate to have been successful at Euro Nations Qualifying for the first time in 2023, and now progressing towards Euro Nations in Italy in 2025. If successful at this stage, then the Scotland Team would progress to the World Cup in 2026 for the first time in the country’s history.
Powerchair football operates solely on a community voluntary basis and started in Scotland around 2011. Currently the SPFA are a registered charity and have five clubs across Scotland with ten active teams across two national leagues. The enabling infrastructure is solely part time volunteers to include parents, carers, coaches and referees.
Matches are played as four a side on a basketball size pitch. Powerchair Football is unique in nature as it is inclusive and allows all ages, disabilities and genders to compete together. Playing the game enables wheelchair users to take part in regular activity at club level and provides players with the opportunity and choice of team competition.
In the main, around 90% of our current players have either Cerebral Palsy or a form of Muscular Dystrophy. The sport provides the players with key life skills such as confidence, teamwork and communication.
We are trying to mobilise a group of circa 25 people to include players, carers, coaches. This would include Insurance and Transport costs. Our funding has traditionally supported League and Cup games across Scotland so travelling is an exceptional expense. These are talented players who have been selected to represent Scotland at Euro Nations 2025 and you will be able to follow their journey via the SPFA website: thespfa.org
